Creating a Cohort

The Cohort Builder allows you to define precise patient populations using a variety of selection criteria. This guide walks you through the process of creating your first cohort.

Starting a New Cohort

Open Cohort Builder

From the main navigation, click on Cohort Builder in the sidebar menu.

Click "New Cohort"

Click the "+ New Cohort" button in the top-right corner of the page.

Name Your Cohort

Enter a descriptive name for your cohort. Choose something meaningful that describes the population you're building.

Add Description (Optional)

Provide an optional description with details about the cohort's purpose, study context, or selection methodology.

Adding Selection Criteria

Once you've created a new cohort, you can add criteria to define your patient population. Criteria can be combined using AND/OR logic to create complex selections.

Available Criteria Types

👤 Demographics

Filter by age, gender, race, ethnicity, geographic region, and more.

🏥 Diagnosis

Select patients by ICD-10 codes, condition groups, or clinical classifications.

⚕️ Procedures

Filter by CPT codes, HCPCS codes, or procedure categories.

💊 Medications

Select by drug name, therapeutic class, NDC codes, or medication groups.

Pro Tip: Start with broader criteria and refine as needed. You can always see the real-time patient count as you add criteria.

Combining Criteria

Use logical operators to combine multiple criteria:

  • AND - Patients must meet ALL connected criteria
  • OR - Patients must meet AT LEAST ONE of the connected criteria
  • NOT - Exclude patients who meet the specified criteria

Viewing Patient Count

As you add and modify criteria, the system displays a real-time count of patients matching your selection. This helps you understand the impact of each criterion before finalizing your cohort.

Note: Very complex cohort definitions may take longer to calculate. The patient count is an estimate and may vary slightly in the final analysis.
